New exciting changes are being trialled this year during the doubles to enhance the product for fans and players. One of the major changes being trialled is an increase in singles vs doubles action. At select tournaments the draw will feature reserved slots for teams entering via their singles ranking, resulting in more unmissable clashes between the world’s top doubles and singles players.
For the first time the ATP is trialling player-worn microphones during doubles matches. First introduced at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, the new trial has been brought in to bring fans closer to the action and give spectators insights to conversations between players on court and during changeovers.
During trials so far this season at the Mutua Madrid Open and cinch Championships, schedules have been modified to make the format easier to follow. This includes changes such as scheduling the doubles within the second week of longer events, having more matches in the evening to encourage more fans to attend and more.
Another key change to look out for is a faster shot clock. In Washington there was a maximum of 21 seconds between all points plus 60-second changeovers with time called after 40 seconds. Within other trials teams may also request a one time extension per set to discuss tactics.
